The children placed in this group are approximately 1920 months of age through young two's. The children are taught to sit at the table, to work with a spoon, and to use simple table manners in keeping with their development. In constant communication with their teacher, they learn new words and sentences as they are encouraged to use words to make requests and solve problems. Older children (if ready) are potty trained in cooperation with parents at home. The children go outdoors to play on nice days.
The daily program for toddlers is simple. The children sing simple songs and listen to and move to music. They use basic art materials. Books of an appropriate age level are read to them daily. Nursery rhymes are read and said often. We show pictures of animals to the children for identification and talk about what animals say. Teachers name objects and colors daily. Some simple counting occurs within the context of play. The teacher often uses puppets and encourages the children to communicate with their puppet friends. The senses are explored using visuals, tasting parties, listening games and music, touchy/feely bags and smell games. The children are nicely prepared for their next big step Jr. Preschool.
